Clairo is one of those musicians who’s grown up in the public eye, and now, with her third album and tour, “Charm,” she’s proving she’s all grown up! It’s very rare to see artists at 25 years old go through such a dramatic shift in the way they do music. The typical case is someone like Miley Cyrus, but in that situation, she was a kid’s show star; when she got a chance to break out into her own, she was able to show her true colors as a singer. With Clairo, it wasn’t that she was “oppressed” by a media company or record label. It’s just that she was a talented musician who was self-producing. Naturally, a lot of her early work, particularly “Pretty Girl,” which she released on YouTube, doesn’t have a lot of edits.
You’re hearing a very “raw” emotional track. Then, when she moved on to a track like “Sofia,” she kept the lo-fi with a bit more of the background music mix. You have to remember, though, that Clairo has a DJ background as well, so it was only a matter of time before she incorporated more synths into her songs. There’s certainly a bit more “digitalization” in “Sexy to Someone” from her new album, Charm.
